The sobering new statistic that this generation of children may be the first to have a shorter expected lifespan than their parents should be a wake up call for all parents. Significant cause: Childhood obesity and lack of physical activity.
At Qi Lifestyle, our aim is to provide children with fun, motivating ways to develop a love of physical activity that will foster participation in physical activity throughout the child’s lifetime.
Computers, television, academic pressures and a host of other factors contribute to the general decreased level of physical activity seen in many of our children today. This, coupled with a calorie-dense nutrient-poor fast food and soft drink diet, is a major factor influencing the general decline in physical fitness and increase in obesity rates in today’s youth.
Why is it a worry? There are the usual health related risks: Lack of physical activity is a significant contributing factor to becoming overweight. Overweight children are four times more likely to grow up into overweight adults. Being overweight as a child puts him at significantly higher risk for health problems related to obesity ie. diabetes, heart disease etc.
The decrease in physical activity even in normal weight children, however, can be a concern as many of the basic foundational movement and sports skills are learned during this time ie. Running, jumping, catching, throwing etc. If these skills aren’t learned during these formative years, a child will be much less confident performing these activities as he gets older. Again, contributing to weight gain and decreased physical fitness.
At Qi Lifestyle, our aim is to provide children with fun, motivating ways to develop a love of physical activity that will foster participation in physical activity throughout the child’s lifetime.
